What ecommerce marketing includes

Ecommerce marketing brings the right shoppers to your online store, helps them buy and brings them back for more. Growing an online store profitably means working on three things at once: acquisition (traffic), conversion (the store experience) and retention (repeat customers).

A complete ecommerce marketing programme covers:

  • Google Shopping ads and Performance Max: your products with image and price in front of shoppers searching for them.
  • Ecommerce SEO: category and product pages that rank for buying searches, with structured data for rich results.
  • Meta Ads: catalogue ads, prospecting and dynamic retargeting on Facebook and Instagram.
  • Conversion rate optimisation: product pages, trust, shipping clarity, checkout and speed.
  • Email, SMS and WhatsApp flows: abandoned cart, welcome, post-purchase and win-back.
  • Analytics: GA4 ecommerce tracking and profit-aware reporting.

The goal is not more traffic — it is more revenue per session and more profit per customer.

Who ecommerce marketing is for
  • D2C brands on Shopify or WooCommerce ready to scale beyond word of mouth.
  • Retailers moving from marketplaces towards their own store and margins.
  • Niche stores with clear product demand and a defined audience.
  • Established stores whose ad costs keep rising while sales stay flat.

Before scaling ads, a store needs a working product feed, reliable tracking and product pages that convert. If those are missing, the first month goes into fixing them — otherwise ad spend buys traffic the store cannot convert.

How I run ecommerce marketing
Ecommerce marketing process: Diagnose → Fix → Acquire → Retain
How a E-commerce Marketing engagement runs, step by step.
  1. Diagnose. Store analytics, product margins, feed health, top sellers, conversion funnel, page speed and current ad performance.
  2. Fix. Tracking repaired, Merchant Center feed optimised, product pages and checkout improved, quick wins in speed and trust.
  3. Acquire. Google Shopping ads, Performance Max and Meta catalogue campaigns, structured by margin and best sellers; ecommerce SEO for category pages.
  4. Retain. Email and WhatsApp flows, post-purchase journeys and offers that increase repeat orders.
What ecommerce marketing costs

Ecommerce marketing budgets depend on product margins, average order value and growth goals. Many Indian D2C brands start with ₹30,000–₹1,50,000 a month in ad spend across Google and Meta.

Management for ecommerce campaigns is part of my Full-Funnel Leads plan, from ₹9,999* a month, adapted for stores: Google and Meta run as one, product feed and catalogue optimisation, conversion tracking and monthly revenue reporting. If you need a new store first, see WooCommerce or Shopify development.

The key number is contribution margin after ad costs — a high ROAS on low-margin products can still lose money, so campaigns are structured around profit, not just revenue.

Timelines and results
  • Weeks 1–3: tracking and feed fixes; quick conversion wins on product pages and checkout.
  • Months 1–2: Shopping and Meta campaigns optimised; budget focused on profitable products.
  • Months 2–4: retention flows recover abandoned carts and increase repeat orders; ecommerce SEO starts lifting category pages.
  • Months 4–6: scaling spend on proven products and audiences.

The target I set with store owners is usually revenue per session, not traffic: the measure that captures both better shoppers and a better store.

Google Shopping ads and product feed optimisation

For most online stores, Google Shopping ads and Performance Max are the most profitable paid channel — but only with a strong product feed. The feed is effectively your ad copy.

  • Titles: lead with what shoppers search — brand, product type, key attribute, size or colour.
  • Images: clean, high-resolution, with the product clearly visible.
  • Prices and availability: always in sync with the store to avoid disapprovals.
  • GTINs and identifiers: where they exist, they improve matching.
  • Custom labels: margin bands, best sellers and seasonal products, so campaigns can be structured by profitability.

Feed improvements alone frequently raise Shopping click-through and conversion rates before any bidding changes.

Ecommerce SEO for category and product pages

Ecommerce SEO brings shoppers who search for products without paying per click. The highest-value pages are usually categories, not individual products, because they match broader buying searches.

  • Category pages with useful introductions, filters that do not create duplicate URLs and internal links to subcategories.
  • Product pages with unique descriptions, specifications, FAQs and reviews.
  • Product and review schema for rich results showing price, availability and ratings.
  • Technical health: faceted navigation, pagination and out-of-stock handling done correctly.
  • Buying guides that answer comparison questions and link to categories.
Ecommerce marketing mistakes
  • Scaling ads before conversion tracking is accurate.
  • One Shopping campaign for every product, regardless of margin.
  • Ignoring abandoned carts — usually the cheapest revenue available.
  • Thin, duplicated product descriptions copied from suppliers.
  • Hidden shipping costs revealed only at checkout.
  • Judging success on ROAS alone without considering profit and repeat purchases.
Questions to ask before hiring ecommerce marketing help
  • Will you structure campaigns around my margins, not just revenue?
  • How will you improve my product feed?
  • Do you also work on conversion rate and retention, or only ads?
  • How will results be reported — revenue, profit or both?
  • Do I keep full ownership of ad accounts, Merchant Center and data?
Meta Ads for online stores

Meta Ads — Facebook and Instagram — are where most shoppers discover products they were not searching for. For ecommerce marketing they play three roles:

  • Prospecting: broad or Advantage+ audiences with strong creative to find new customers.
  • Catalogue ads: dynamic ads showing products from your feed, personalised to each shopper.
  • Retargeting: reminding product viewers and cart abandoners, often with reviews or delivery information.

Creative is the main lever: user-generated videos, unboxing clips, before-and-after comparisons and clear offers usually outperform polished catalogue photos. Meta campaigns also need the Conversions API alongside the pixel so purchases are tracked accurately.

Conversion rate optimisation for stores

Ecommerce marketing spends money to bring shoppers to the store, so every improvement in conversion rate makes every channel more profitable. The highest-impact fixes are usually:

  • Product pages: clear photos and video, sizing information, delivery dates, returns policy and reviews close to the "Add to cart" button.
  • Trust: secure payment badges, cash-on-delivery options where relevant and real contact details.
  • Checkout: guest checkout, fewer fields, UPI and wallet payments and no surprise costs.
  • Speed: compressed images and fewer apps or plugins slowing the store down.
  • Mobile: thumb-friendly buttons and sticky add-to-cart on product pages.
Retention: email, SMS and WhatsApp flows

Acquiring a customer costs far more than keeping one, and repeat customers usually spend more. Automated flows do most of the retention work:

  • Abandoned cart and browse: reminders within hours, then a day later with reviews or an incentive.
  • Welcome: the brand story, best sellers and a first-order offer for new subscribers.
  • Post-purchase: order updates, usage tips, review requests and cross-sells.
  • Replenishment: reminders timed to when consumable products run out.
  • Win-back: offers for customers who have not ordered in 90–120 days.

Set up once, these flows earn revenue every day and lift the lifetime value that makes Google Shopping ads and Meta campaigns more affordable.

Profit, not just ROAS

ROAS measures revenue per rupee of ad spend, but it ignores product costs, shipping, returns and discounts. A store can show a 4× ROAS and still lose money on low-margin products. I calculate break-even ROAS for each product group and structure Google Shopping ads and Meta campaigns around contribution margin — so budget flows to the products that actually make you money, and ecommerce SEO effort targets the most profitable categories first.

Seasonal and festive campaigns

For Indian online stores, festive seasons — Diwali, Raksha Bandhan, wedding season, end-of-season sales — can produce a large share of annual revenue. Ecommerce marketing for these peaks starts weeks ahead: building audiences and email lists, preparing creative and offers, checking stock and delivery capacity, and raising Google Shopping ads and Meta budgets before competition drives up costs. After the peak, retention flows turn festive first-time buyers into repeat customers.

Marketplaces and your own store

Amazon, Flipkart and other marketplaces bring huge reach but take commissions and keep customer relationships. Your own store keeps margins and data. Many brands use marketplaces for discovery and their own store for repeat customers, bundles and exclusive products — with ecommerce SEO, email and WhatsApp bringing shoppers back directly.

Reviews and user-generated content

Shoppers trust other shoppers. Product reviews, customer photos, unboxing videos and ratings raise conversion rates on product pages, improve click-through on Google Shopping ads when ratings are shown, and provide some of the best-performing creative for Meta. Ask for reviews automatically a few days after delivery, make it easy to add photos, respond to negative reviews constructively and feature the best customer content across the store, social media and ads. Review schema on product pages can also bring star ratings into Google results — a quiet but steady boost for ecommerce SEO and click-through.

Bundles, upsells and average order value

Raising average order value makes every marketing channel more profitable, because the cost of acquiring the order stays roughly the same. Product bundles, "frequently bought together" suggestions, free-shipping thresholds just above the typical basket and post-purchase one-click offers are proven ways to lift it. Test each offer and watch margin as well as revenue.

How to measure ecommerce marketing
Ecommerce marketing KPIs: Revenue per session, ROAS by channel, Conversion rate, Repeat purchase rate
The numbers I report on every month (illustrative).
  • Revenue per session — the single best measure of traffic quality and store performance together.
  • ROAS by channel — Google Shopping, Performance Max and Meta, checked against store data.
  • Conversion rate — sessions ending in an order, by device.
  • Repeat purchase rate — customers buying again within 90 days.

Self-check: what share of last month's revenue came from returning customers? If it is under 20%, retention flows are probably the quickest ecommerce marketing win available.

Which platforms do you support?

Shopify, WooCommerce, Magento and custom builds.

Do you handle marketplace ads?

Amazon and Flipkart advertising, yes — at a strategy and structure level.

What's a healthy ROAS?

It depends entirely on margin. I set the target from your unit economics.

Which ads work best for ecommerce?

Google Shopping ads and Performance Max for shoppers already searching, and Meta catalogue ads for discovery and retargeting. Most stores need both.

What is ecommerce SEO?

Optimising category and product pages, structured data and site architecture so your products rank in Google without paying per click.

Do you work with Shopify and WooCommerce?

Yes — tracking, feeds, ads, SEO and retention for both platforms.

How do you recover abandoned carts?

With timed email, SMS and WhatsApp reminders, clearer shipping information and checkout improvements.

What ROAS should my store target?

It depends on margins. I calculate a break-even ROAS from your product costs and set targets above it.

Should I sell on marketplaces or my own store?

Usually both — marketplaces for reach, your own store for margin and customer relationships.

How much ad spend does an online store need?

Many D2C brands start at ₹30,000–₹1,50,000 a month across Google and Meta, depending on order value and goals.

Can you fix my Merchant Center disapprovals?

Yes — feed errors, policy issues and website requirements are part of the diagnosis.
